The classic Frisbee-style discs used by some competitors are not known for their longevity. All-too-often, these lightweight discs are quickly “killed” by canines in the course of a few minutes play. Despite the availability of longer-lasting canine discs like Hyperflite’s Jawz, some competitors still prefer the extra hang time afforded by discs with short-lived lifespans. When “Plasticus Mortis” occurs to a disposable disc, disc dog enthusiasts come up with some interesting ways to give their retired dog toys a second life.

Disc dogger Mark Wood was an early trendsetter in the field of disc “repurposing.” Wood made a Halloween costume from his retired Fastback Frisbees long before repurposing was cool (see page 279 of Disc Dogs! The Complete Guide for the visual). If you can imagine “Cousin It” from the Adams Family, then you have an idea of how Wood looked. However, instead of hair, Wood’s version of “Cousin it” was an overcoat of canine Frisbee discs. Wood was careful never to wear the costume to a canine disc competition…for obvious reasons.

We learned that another disc dogger used his spent discs as roofing shingles on a dog house! Discs have been used in artwork, as gold mining pans, and as garden hoes. And speaking of gardens, we’ve seen photos of discs tied to cornstalks as if they were actually growing in the garden. Talk about a cash crop! Heck, we’ve even been sent photographs of discs strung like garland at parties and seen them serve as plate holders at cookouts (after washing we hope!).

Enterprising disc dog clubs have used the retired discs for human only throwing contests. Anyone who has ever thrown a badly-chewed disc knows that damaged discs can be difficult to throw because of their unpredictable flight characteristics. Using them for target practice, at a fun match between disc dogging humans, is a novel way to improve throwing skills.

We know that there is no end to the inventiveness of disc dog enthusiasts and we’d love to know what you’ve done with your retired canine discs. E-mail us at info@hyperflite.com and share your repurposing tips.
